I’m happiest following an idea from “wouldn’t it be useful if…” to something running on my own hardware.
Gaming and PC hardware were the starting point. Building my first PC led to Linux, then Proxmox, containers, networking, and self-hosting. Software development followed: if a useful tool doesn’t exist, I want to understand the problem well enough to build it.
I don’t pretend to know everything. I build, get something wrong, work out why, and write down the useful parts. This site is the record of that process.
The route here
- Around 2009: Xbox and PC gaming sparked an interest in hardware and performance.
- 2020: researched, assembled, and tuned my first custom Ryzen and RTX desktop.
- 2025: Linux, Proxmox, LXC containers, Debian media services, DNS, and private networking.
- Since then: full-stack and desktop software, including UMA Companion, and documenting the work.
Tools, not a skills scorecard
Rust, TypeScript/TSX, Python, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, PowerShell, and Git. Proxmox, Linux, Docker, LXC, Nginx, Cloudflare Tunnel, Pi-hole, Unbound, Tailscale, Debian, ZFS, and SQLite. The mix changes with the problem.
AI-assisted, still personal
I use AI-assisted development as part of building and maintaining things. Atlas, my AI assistant, helps inspect systems, document changes, and work through website updates. The useful part is making changes understandable, reversible, and verified.
